When you live and Canada and it’s winter there’s nothing you long for more than a escape. So when UNICO 20°87° Hotel Riviera Maya Akumal Mexico called and asked if I’d like to come and stay for their first birthday celebration for the weekend it’s pretty easy to figure out my answer was a HELL YES.
Regardless of where you live and what the climate is in your home habitat an escape is always a good idea because we all need a little rest from the stresses of everyday life.
UNICO 20°87° Hotel

The grounds from top to bottom are breathtaking both inside and out. It’s like meeting that jaw-dropping supermodel that also has a heart of gold. With three outdoor infinity pools lined with palm trees and a selection of private cabanas and lounge furniture it’s easy to spend your days soaking up that Mexican sunshine.

UNICO 20°87° Hotel – Food and Restaurants
So, now for some real talk – FOOD. All-inclusives have a bad reputation when it comes to food and rightfully so. For the most part you would consider yourself lucky if the all-inclusive you’re staying at has mediocre food at best.
At the hotel you have the option of 5 restaurants, 2 bars & lounges, in-room dining, and an outdoor grill that serves poolside and you can eat everything from Japanese to Italian, to traditional Mexican with a smattering of North American comfort dishes. Well let me just say that the food here is no joke. Unlike most all-inclusive it’s claims to fine dining actually stack up to the hype. I was pleasantly surprised at just how good the food here was.

While it’s all so diet-breaking delicious, my personal favourites were the breakfast buffet and dinner at 20°87° Restaurant, in-room dining (who doesn’t love room service?), and the outdoor grill poolside (get the fresh corn tortilla tacos and the wood-oven pizza with a side of calamari). Delish!

As gorgeous as their trio of infinity pools are there’s nothing quite like being on the beach, and with boardwalk access to this breathtaking stunner you’ll be hard pressed to decide whether you want to spend your days pool-side or on the white sands listening to those pristine aqua waves lull you into relaxation.

Spa
Now the only thing I love more than food & travel is the spa. Esencia spa is one of the prettiest and most relaxing spa sanctuaries I have ever been to. The best part? They offer services here at only 20% of the list price. Facial or hot stone massage for $50? Yes please.

Excursions
During our stay we also got to check out one of the excursions that they offer to guests. I did the Mayan Village & Tankah Cenote tour where we got to swim, canoe, and zipline over private cenotes. Access to private cenotes meant that we virtually had the place to ourselves which means no overcrowding and a truly relaxing experience when you feel like you’re there by yourself. We ended off the day visiting a Mayan Village where we ate a home cooked Mayan meal. I still think about the 3 hour roasted chicken that literally falls off the bone if you even so much as breathe on it. Like the spa treatments the excursions are only 20% of the listed price. SCORE.

Now I have to say that I’ve never been much of a resort person, but let me tell you Unico 20°87° Hotel Riviera Maya can convert even the biggest of resort critics, because it converted me and that’s saying something. There are a lot of resorts out there that claim to be luxurious and quite honestly they more often than not do not live up to their well placed marketing hype. Not the case here, Unico 20°87° Hotel Riviera Maya was one of the best vacations I’ve ever had. The only thing I’m wishing for now is another change to come back for another getaway.
