Teara Lab is a new Japanese sandwich fusion restaurant located in Toronto’s Annex neighborhood. The atmosphere is sleek and minimal with white marble tables, white walls, and natural wood flooring.

In addition to sandwiches and burgers they also have an extensive offering of bubble tea, fruit tea drinks, and tea slush beverages.

First we try the Yuzu Teriyaki Fish Burger (Ace bakery black bun, mayonnaise; iceberg lettuce, herb mayonnaise,  baked basa fish with Yuzu teriyaki sauce and havarti cheese, Tomatoes, Crispy onions, sprinkled with dry seaweed powder.), $9.49 CDN + tax alone or $11.49 CDN + tax combo. Definitely the most eye-catching menu item the black bun definitely makes this menu item a standout visually. The color does not do anything to affect the taste though and it tastes just like any other classic white bun. The fish is moist and the lettuce was fresh and crisp. The yuzu teriyaki sauce gave this burger a sweet flavor. Overall this burger has all the elements to be great but would be better had it been more savory than sweet.

Next we tried the Teppanyaki Teriyaki Chicken Burger (Iceberg lettuce; wasabi mayonnaise; Tomatoes; baked teriyaki chicken with havarti cheese;crispy onions; sprinkled with seaweed powder. ), $8.49 CDN + tax alone or $10.49 CDN + tax as combo. The chicken was well cooked and tender and the wasabi mayo definitely give this sandwich a nice subtle kick. This sandwich was definitely a winner for me and I’ll be back for more it.

Teara Lab: Fish Sandwich + Chicken Sandwich + Lemon Da Da + Okinawa Milk Tea
Teara Lab: Teppanyaki Teriyaki Chicken Burger + Yuzu Teriyaki Fish Burger + Okinawa Milk Tea + Lemon Da Da

If you’ve ever been to a bubble tea shop then you can expect to find some classic bubble tea favorites on the menu as well. I try an Okinawa milk tea and a Lemon Da Da fruit tea. The Lemon Da Da was refreshing and not overly sweet. A perfect drink for a hot summer day. The Okinawa milk tea was smooth and creamy and prepared just as well as a bubble tea shop that is devoted solely to bubble tea. Standard bubble tea toppings such as Tapioca / Aloe Vera / Red bean / Lychee jelly / Creama are also available to add to your beverage for $0.50 CDN + tax each.

Teara Lab: Soy Glazed Pork Belly with Sweet Potato Fires + Fries
Teara Lab: Soy Glazed Pork Belly with Sweet Potato Fires + Fries

Finally, we try the Soy Glazed Pork Belly Sandwich (Ace bakery hotdog bun, mayonnaise,  iceberg lettuce; kimchi; soy glazed tenderized pork belly, avocado, tomatoes, rinsed onions, seaweed), $9.99 CDN + tax alone or $11.99 CDN + tax as a combo. The pork belly was tender and the kimchi mayonnaise added a unique spice when paired well with the pork belly, avocados, tomatoes, onions, and seaweed.

On the side we get a mix of both French fries and Yam fries. Alone, the fries are pretty uninteresting. They also could have been crispier. However, order then with a side of wasabi mayo for dipping and you have a unique and tasty flavor combination. In fact the fries should always be served with the wasabi mayo.

Overall, my experience at Teara Lab was enjoyable. I would come back to try some of their other menu items and tea beverages. I would however like to see them offer vegetarian options for burgers/sandwiches as well as more side menu items like a tempura battered onion ring with a flavorful dipping sauce or side salads.
