Sate Sate is an Indonesian restaurant located in North York, just a 30 minute drive North of Toronto’s downtown core. Specializing in Indonesian street food the space is modern with seating for about 15-20 people

The menu is fairly straightforward. Protein items ranging from beef, chicken, tempeh, and tofu can either be ordered individually, as a wrap, or as part of an entrée.

We try out the chicken skewer as an entrée ($11.49 CDN + tax) and the Ayam Goreng fried chicken entrée ($11.49 CDN + tax). Each entrée is served with a side of house salad, steamed rice, and acar, and shrimp crackers.

The Ayam Goreng Fried chicken is slightly crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside with just the right amount of Southeast Asian spices. The shrimp chips are crispy, without being overly oily but definitely evoke a strong seafood flavor. The side salad is dressed lightly with vinaigrette and adds a nice freshness to the meal to help break up the all the fried goodness that comes with it.

The chicken skewers are grilled and then drizzled with a peanut satay sauce. The chicken is well cooked, but the peanut satay sauce is strongly flavored with lemongrass – so much so that it only tastes like lemongrass. It would be nice if the lemongrass flavor was a little more subtle so you get some peanut flavor shining through as well.

Next, we try the Rendang as a meal. Curried beef is stewed with spices and again served with a side of shrimp chips, salad, and rice. The beef is incredibly tender and flakes easily under my fork. While the beef is incredibly flavorful I did find this too spicy for my liking, but if you enjoy the heat then this dish is for you.

Lastly, we try their vegarian options the Tempeh Skewer ($3.79 CDN + tax as a side, $11.49 CDN + tax as an entrée) and the Tofu Skewer ($2.79 CDN + tax as a side, $10.49 CDN + tax as an entrée). Like the chicken skewers the tofu and tempeh are drizzled in the peanut satay sauce. Both are cooked well, but again I would have preferred it if there was a better balance between the lemongrass and peanut flavors in the satay sauce.

Overall my experience at Satay Sate was enjoyable. Service was friendly and the space was bright, clean and modern – something that you typically don’t find at quick service eateries in this area of Toronto. Most importantly, Satay Sate fills a gap for Indonesian/South East Asian food in Toronto’s food scene and does so with tasty straightforward menu options in a casual and relaxed atmosphere.
