Kaka All You Can Eat is a Japanese buffet located in the First Markham Place plaza in Markham just west of Highway #7 and Warden Avenue. It is not your typical Japanese all you can eat buffet though. The décor and atmosphere is modern and the seating is ample. Table service is also provided with an ipad where your choices can be input and then brought to your seat once it has been prepared.

Truthfully, I’m not a fan of all you can eat buffets because typically the quality of the food you receive isn’t exactly the greatest. I was willing to give Kaka a shot though since I’ve heard from several friends that it was quite good and had a wide variety of dishes to choose from. I was also told that they had some new menu additions that were pretty stellar.

First we started with the Fish Tempura tacos. Served on a miniature tortilla, fish tempura is topped with diced red onions, green peppers, corn, diced tomatoes, and spicy aioli. The size of the tacos was just right for an all you can eat dining experience and the chopped veggies were fresh. I probably wouldn’t order this again though if I came back because I prefer to stick to more traditional Japanese dishes if I’m going to eat Japanese. It’s a pretty good alternative though if you’re looking for some Asian fusion to break up all the sushi/sashimi you end up consuming at these types of places.

Next we tried the chicken skewers. Served as tiny chicken meatballs with a teriyaki soy sauce blend on the side the chicken meatballs were nice and moist and had good flavor to them. The fact that they were also bite sized also made them perfect for an all you can eat setting where you’ll most likely want to try several types of dishes.

The new menu items I was most excited to try out were the newly added Poke bowls. If you’re unfamiliar with Poke bowls, they originate from Hawaii and consist of chopped seafood on top of a bed of rice with various types of sauces and other ingredients. They’re also one of the hottest food trends to currently take Toronto by storm right now, so it’s not surprising that Kaka would have added them to their menu.

There are 3 types of poke bowls at Kaka. The first has chopped salmon sashimi mixed with spicy aioli, diced tomatoes, and diced avocado. It’s good, very good in fact.  The mix of flavors and ingredients go well together and the rice is cooked perfectly. The second poke bowl has chopped monk fish, diced avocado, diced cucumber, a teriyaki dressing, and hickory sticks. At first, I’m apprehensive when I see there’s hickory sticks but it ends up being my favorite of the three. I would be happy to come here again to eat 20 of these bowls. The final poke bowl we try has chopped white tuna, diced cucumber, diced avocado, and diced cantaloupe. Again, I’m thrown off a little because of the presence of the cantaloupe but surprisingly it works. It’s refreshing and just slightly sweet and is a good poke bowl for summer.

So even though Kaka is known for their All You Can Eat dinner they also offer lunch items which can be ordered à la carte. A few of these items caught our eye when looking at the menu so we decided to give them a try as well.

The first item from the lunch menu we try is the Blow Torched Sushi Combo, $17.99 CDN + tax. The combo comes with 3 pieces salmon, 2 pices bluefin tuna, 2 pieces hamachi, 2 pieces of B.C tuna, which are served in traditional sushi style but then blow torched to give it extra smoky flavor. While the quality of the blow torched sushi is definitely exceptionally higher than your typical all you can eat restaurant if you’re looking to try blow torched sushi I would recommend you stick with a place that specializes in it.

Lastly, we tried the Blow Torched Maki Combo, $15.99 CDN + tax. A shrimp roll is served topped with honey mustard sauce and spicy mayonnaise aioli. This is a classic fusion type maki roll that you would see most Japanese restaurants. The flavors are bold, and again the quality is much higher than that of most all you can eat establishments.

Overall I really enjoyed my experience at Kaka. The quality of the food was definitely much higher than that of most all you can eat restaurants, so if you’re they type of person that likes to get your fill at a fixed rate then this place is definitely for you. The poke bowls were definitely the standout of the items I ate. In fact their poke bowls were even better than most places that I’ve tried in Toronto that actually specialize in poke. Be sure to order their sparkling sake by Mio as well. A little bit sweet and bubbly like champagne it will make all the raw fish you consume go down that much nicer.

For reference, the all you can eat dinner is $28.99 CDN + tax per person during the week and $31.99 CDN + tax per person on weekends.
