Hot Black Coffee is located in Toronto’s trendy Queen West neighborhood. With concrete floors, and airplants that hang across the white walls the space is clean and minimalistic. Skylights throughout flood the space with natural light, while pops of red and copper give this coffee shop a clean and modern feel.

During the spring/summer months you also won’t want to miss out on the backyard patio. Walk straight to the back of the coffee shop and out the door and you’ll be rewarded with an urban oasis. Colorful streams of chevron and striped fabrics hang above the patio space giving it a playful and uplifting feel. Communal picnic tables offer seating space while a large, ornate tree branch structure sits perched along the back wall to tie in natural elements.

Look to the floor of the patio and you’ll see wall edges lined with succulents and driftwood, which give the space a zen-like feel.

Coffee is by local Toronto roaster Detour and is served in double walled clear Henckels mugs which are designed to keep beverages both piping hot or cold for prolonged periods of time. We try the cappuccino ($3.75 CDN + tax) and an Americano ($2.75 CDN + tax). I found both coffees to be overly bitter, and truthfully I wasn’t a fan.

In addition to typical coffee shop offerings like muffins and croissants they also offer a wide variety of vegan and gluten free treats. Salads are also available should you be looking for something on the healthier side. On the day that I visit I try the lemon poppy seed palmier ($2.50 CDN + tax). It’s more savory than sweet and the lemon and poppy seed of course are a classic pairing. It’s a nice treat alternative to typical sweet pastries.

Overall I enjoyed my experience at Hot Black Coffee. While the coffee was too bitter I would be willing to come back again to see if it was an “off” day and if a second taste would have better results. The service was also very friendly and attentive and the atmosphere of the space was casual, yet well appointed and relaxing.
