As the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand it has in recent years been marked with great hardships. From the devastating earthquakes in 2010-2011 to a terrorist attack earlier this year at Muslim mosques Christchurch has had to endure a lot. Despite these things Christchurch, and New Zealand as a whole has proven itself a country that rallies together, rebuilds as a community, and supports all those who have been affected.
And while these events definitely should not be forgotten they also shouldn’t define this city because there is so much beauty here that far exceeds these events. Christchurch and the people here are so warm and welcoming that it will forever leave an imprint on your heart once you’ve visited.
What to Do
Christchurch Botanic Gardens

Known as the ‘Garden City’ Christchurch is absolutely sprawling with horticultural beauty. While the entire city itself is breathtaking of course the Christchurch Botanical Gardens is where you will see the largest concentration of beautiful foliage.

New Regent Street

New Regent Street is an architectural beauty. Pastel hued Spanish Mission style architectural houses line the street with endless cafes, shops, and cute restaurants. There is also a vintage style tram that passes through here giving you a charming tour of the city.
Hike up Bridle Path to View Lyttelton Harbour

If you’re looking for a workout with a big payoff beyond those toned legs than a hike up Christchurch’s Bridle Path is exactly what you need. You’ll be rewarded with beautiful views of Lyttelton Harbour with some of the bluest waters you’ve ever laid eyes on. You can also take a gondola ride up to the top if hiking doesn’t quite go with your footwear.
Take a Day trip to Mt. Cook

Christchurch is only about a 3 hour drive from one of New Zealand’s most celebrated sites, Mt. Cook. It is a nice little road trip for a day or two to go visit Mt. Cook. It was definitely a highlight of my trip taking a plane up to see one of the neighbouring glaciers by this beauty.
What to Eat
C1 Espresso

Hello Sunday

A local favourite daytime spot the food, coffee, and pastries here will really hit the spot. Whether you want comforting and indulgent, or light and satisfying Hello Sunday delivers it all and more.
Earl

Half upscale dining, half casual coffee shop Earl does it right no matter which side of the room you’re in the mood to be seated in.

Potsticker Dumpling Bar

Potsticker Dumpling Bar was confirmation to me that every craving can be satisfied in Christchurch and in the most delicious way possible too. The pork belly baos were flavourful and juicy and the soup dumplings filled to the brim with warm soup.

5th Street

5th Street comes from the same owners of Hello Sunday but is an evening spot serving dinner and drinks only. The space is beautifully designed and the food here is some of the best I’ve had ever. Make sure to order the tomahawk with bone marrow. It some of the most buttery meat you will ever eat, so you’re welcome.
Christchurch Farmer’s Market

If you’re in Christchurch on a Saturday you absolutely must visit the Christchurch Farmer’s Market at the Riccarton House. You’ll find the finest selection of local produce, baked goods, beverages, and local made crafts.
