Andrea’s Gerrard St. Bakery is located in Toronto’s East Chinatown neighborhood. The entrance, while unassuming and discrete, still stands out amongst the row of Chinese restaurants that line the street.

The interior is long and narrow with incredibly dim lighting. Even on a bright sunny summer day the space barely gets any light. There is some counter height seating lining both walls with the bakery/order area in the back.

The first item I try is the strawberry shortcake which consists of a generous portion of whipped cream and sliced strawberries sandwiched in between a sweetened biscuit, $5 CDN + tax. The strawberry shortcake has been made beforehand and is sitting in the display case and as a result I find the biscuit to be soggy and as a result I didn’t enjoy this shortcake. I think it would have been better had it been assembled upon ordering instead.

Next is the Peanut butter Salted Caramel Blondie, $3 CDN + tax. It’s dense and the peanut butter and salted caramel flavors are perfectly blended. This one is dangerously good.
I also try a lemon tart, $4 CDN + tax. The lemon filling looks overcooked but upon taking a bite I’m pleasantly surprised that it is creamy and just the right amount of tang and sweetness. I feel the crust could be a little crisper but overall I enjoy this one as well.
Finally, the butter tart, $4 CDN + tax. This is probably one of the best butter tarts that I have ever had in Toronto. I’ve eaten many butter tarts in my life and the crust and filling of these are just sheer perfection.

In addition to sweet treats savory items such as sandwiches, quiche, and empanadas are also available. Sadly, I didn’t get a chance to try the savory items but will be back to try more. Especially more of those butter tarts.
