Saturday Dinette: Herb Poached Eggs

Saturday Dinette (Brunch): Toronto, Ontario

Saturday Dinette is an unexpected, but much welcome gem in Toronto’s East Chinatown neighborhood. While it’s not new, and even though I’ve visited this place countless times for brunch,  I wouldn’t feel right not doing a post on one of my favorite brunch spots.

One of my favorite things about this place is the atmosphere. It’s casual yet modern, and has pops of color with retro accents. It’s fun and relaxing and the service is always warm and welcoming.

The presentation here is always stunning. The Herb Poached Eggs (poached eggs, fresh grean pea purée, herb salad, wholemeal toast), $10 CDN + tax is always a favorite. The eggs are always perfectly poached and the green pea purée and herb salad adds nice freshness to the dish. It’s all served on a thick slice of wholemeal toast. Don’t let the description fool you, even though it’s made with fresh and healthy ingredients it’s incredibly filling.

Also not to be missed are the SD Hashbrowns, $3 CDN + tax. They are fried lightly with a nice crisp exterior, warm perfectly cooked interior,  and then seasoned to perfection.

Another favorite off the brunch menu is the Shrooms on Toast (SD mushroom, ‘pale ale’ ragu, wilted greens, fried egg, lavender ricotta), $12 CDN + tax. Again, served on wholemeal toast it’s a vegetarian option that even non-vegetarians can eat and still feel completely satisfied after.

Ok, so Saturday Dinette has also managed to do the impossible – make a gluten free option that does not taste gluten free. Their Buckwheat Panckes (GF Buckwheat Pancakes, Ontario Maple Butter, Salted Caramel Corn), $11 CDN + tax are not only gluten free but also easily one of my favorite pancakes in the city. Hands down. As someone who tends to shun gluten free items (let’s be honest, they usually don’t taste that great), this dish makes me feel like I actually could go gluten free (even though I would never actually do that).

Finally, if you’re looking for something more on the savory lunch side they also have Braised Chicken Thighs(Braised Chicken thighs, buttered beans, pickled shallots, radishes, celery tops), $15 CDN + tax. It definitely puts the “unch” in”Brunch” category but still an amazing option if you’re looking for something more lunch-like amongst your breakfast obsessed friends. The chicken thighs are braised perfectly to give a nice golden hue that is not only flavorful, but also ensures that the chicken remains perfectly tender. The buttered beans adds a nice creamy base to the dish and the shallots, radishes and celery add freshness. Keep in mind though that this dish is available weekdays only.

Truthfully, there’s nothing bad that I can say about this place. I’ve never eaten anything here that I didn’t love. Couple that with a relaxed and fun atmosphere, warm service, and wifi and it’s pretty much why this is one of my go-to brunch spots in the city. Oh AND they do weekday brunch too, a rare treat in Toronto. Honestly, my goal is to try everything on their menu and I have yet to try their dinner which if brunch is any indication I’ll probably just end up wanting to move in.
