Located in Toronto’s Bloordale Village, Baddies Café is located just a short walk from Lansdowne Subway station.
With white-washed exposed brick walls, marble slabs strewn throughout the space, and wallpaper by the ever talented Candice Kaye Design it’s easily the picturesque scene for anyone wanting that perfect shot for social media. A set of bleachers sit parked against the back wall for additional casual seating for sipping coffee, but expect to see plenty of Toronto social media fashionistas parked up on it as the flood of natural light from the large front windows and white brick walls make for the perfectly staged outfit photo.

Coffee here is by Vancouver roaster 49th parallel and is expertly poured. Teas are also from 49th parallel in addition to Belgian hot chocolate.

For food there’s plenty of coffee shop staple pastries which are all made in-house in addition to yogurt and muesli. The real star though is their breakfast menu which is available daily.
We try out their Steak Sammy, $12 CDN + tax. Dry aged steak is sandwiched in between a soft milk bun with heirloom tomatoes, maple bacon marmalade, and beet labne. A sunny side up egg can be added for an additional $2 CDN + tax. Besides the fact that the presentation is stunning it tastes like perfection. The steak is perfectly cooked and tender and pairs well with the tomatoes, maple bacon marmalade, and beet.

We also try the Smashed Avocado, $9 CDN + tax. When it first arrives I’m pleasantly surprised, not by the fact that the presentation is once again beautiful, but at the amount of avocado that’s piled high on the toast. Sadly, Toronto establishments for the most part are downright stingy when it comes to avocado. Order an avocado toast in Toronto and more likely than not you can expect to receive 3 slivers of avocado or the thinnest spread of smashed avocado that’s barely thicker than a sheet a paper on top of a much too large slice of bread. This is not the case at Baddies though and it is definitely a much welcomed sight. A generous heaping of avocado sits on top of a slice of sourdough bread and is then topped with seasonal greens, sunflower seeds, and heirloom tomatoes. A smear of beet labne accompanies the dish along with an egg. Rest of Toronto take note – this is how avocado toast should be done.

Baddies Café embodies several rare elements that are difficult to find in Toronto. Not only can it act as a casual spot for a quick coffee but it also doubles as the perfect spot for longer brunch sessions which are available even during the weekday. What’s even more rare is to see this level of cuisine both in aesthetic and taste available in a casual coffee shop setting. I would even say that the food here can easily rival that of establishments which are considered formal and high-end. Couple that with a bright airy interior, friendly service, and a proper avocado toast and it will easily become one of Toronto’s newest gems.
