Sampling the Best Craft Beers at Sheraton Four Points Kelowna Best Brews

Sampling the Best Craft Beers at Sheraton Four Points Kelowna Best Brews

Last week I had the honor of travelling to Kelowna, British Columbia to become a host of Kelowna Four Point’s by Shertaton Airport Hotel’s Best Brews International competition. Four Points by Marriott is known as a haven for craft beer lovers worldwide. Their hotels feature a weekly local craft beer at each of their locations across the globe. This particular event was extra special as it was part of a worldwide International tour for the Best Brews competition. As one of only 6 cities to be chosen for this tour (including Manhatten, Cancun, Melbourne, Barcelona, Nairobi) Kelowna has undoubtedly proven itself to be a trailblazer on the craft brew scene.

As a host part of my requirements was that I was to complete the Ciccerone Beer Server Certification. Now the Ciccerone Certification ranges from Beer Server all the way up to Master Ciccerone and it’s certification is highly regarded and considered the industry standard for knowledge and expertise in beer. In fact it’s certification is to beer as a sommelier is to wine. Having taken the first level of this certification I can honestly say that it is no easy feat to obtain. An in depth knowledge of properties, pairings, proper serving techniques and more is required and that is only for the first level as Beer Server. To be honest I can’t even imagine the rigorous knowledge and care that must be obtained for the Master Ciccerone level. If you are serious beer aficionado though then you can rest assured that staying at a Four Point’s by Sheraton will always make sure you have the finest local craft beer experience as each of their hotels has a certified Ciccerone on staff. Personally for me there is nothing more tragic than travelling to a vacation destination and being disappointed by a beverage that has been mishandled or has been paired incorrectly with a dish. Knowing that there is a certified expert on staff gives me the peace of mind that my vacation taste buds will always be taken care.

The Kelowna stop for the International Best Brews world tour was hosted at none other than the Kelowna Four Point’s by Shertaton Airport Hotel. It is the perfect spot as not only do they host their own weekly Best Brews features but they are conveniently located just a 20 minute drive from all the main attractions that Kelowna has to offer.  Rooms are bright and clean and the hotel features a pool with water slide, conference rooms for meetings and events, fitness facilities, and of course free Wi-Fi! For those that are addicted to their favorite caffeine chain there is also a Tim Horton’s and Starbuck’s located right across the street (I have more than a few friends who can’t live without their venti caramel macchiato), although the hotel does provide complimentary coffee and tea in the lobby 24 hours as well as in each suite should you find yourself a little too jet-lagged to hobble across the road (like me).

I was greeted with a welcome gift including a bottle of local wine and the most scrumptious fruit & cheese board. A much welcome sight after stepping off the airplane. I love a hotel that goes the extra distance to make their guests feel welcome but also supports local producers.

The actual Best Brews International Kelowna stop competition was definitely the highlight of the stay though. The house was packed and I had the honor of hosting alongside local Kelowna radio personality B Mack, as well as Four Points Kelowna’s very own certified Ciccerone Robert Boeckner. Guests were treated to beer infused appetizers created by in-house farm to table Gulfstream Restaurant such as 5 cheese beer dip, beer infused chicken sliders, and beer fish battered tacos alongside featured local breweries including Prohibition Brewing and Tree Brewing.

Everyone was given a score card where they were able to score each of the 2 beers in a blind taste test in categories ranging from appearance, aroma, and taste. I quite enjoyed flexing my newly obtained Ciccerone Beer Server knowledge while explaining each of the categories to the guest but it was definitely something else to see Robert Boeckner, the certified Ciccerone, as well as representatives from the two local breweries give an in depth talk about the beers and the process. True passion is something that can not be learned or studied and knowing that there exists a hotel with a dedication to the art of craft beer makes travel plans that much easier. Because I think at this point there’s no secret that my favorite way to experience any city is through food and drinks.
