Pray Tell is located in Toronto’s Little Italy neighborhood at College & Ossington. Scandinavian design elements are an influence here and the wall shelving unit filled with greenery takes center stage. It’s a beautifully designed space with plush leather banquettes, sleek white Caesar stone tables, and copper light fixtures. It’s chic without being fussy.

While I’ve heard rave reviews about their dinner I’m here to try out brunch. Because brunch basically gives me a reason to live for the weekends obviously. Like all hip new restaurants Avocado Toast is on the menu. For $14 you get smashed avocado, water buffalo fresco, pickled chilis, apple, olive oil, lemon zest, potato hash & mixed greens. Two poached eggs can be added for an additional $2.75. I order mine with the additional poached eggs but they arrive without. I’m a little annoyed but I’m also hungry and to be honest can’t be bothered to wait longer so I just eat the toast anyways without mentioning it to the server. It’s good. I mean, really good and I’m actually a little surprised because most avocado toasts in Toronto are lack luster. This one has some really great subtle flavors that work perfectly well together. It’s interesting and really more than just avocado slathered on bread with some seasoning (like most places). In fact I think it might actually have been for the best that my poached eggs were forgotten as I think the eggs may have overshadowed all the different flavor layers this wonderful little toast had to offer.

Next there is the Breakfast Pocket, which is what I’m most excited to try. For $15 fried dough is stuffed with soft egg & aged cheddar, topped with sausage gravy & smoked paprika,  and then served with a side of potato hash and mixed greens. The most unique of the menu choices the egg is perfectly runny when you cut into the pocket and the sausage gravy is rich and satisfying. It’s very well executed, although I will say that it is too heavy on the dough side. A thinner dough pocket would make this a perfect brunch choice.

Lastly we try the Brunch Burrito. At $14 the tortilla is stuffed with scrambled eggs, tex mex veg, aged cheddar, guacamole, a side of roasted jalapeno crema and potato hash with mixed greens. In-house made sausage can be added for an additional  $3. The roasted vegetables have a nice smoky flavor and you can’t really go wrong paired with eggs, cheese, and guacamole. It’s tasty, but nothing particularly exciting. It tastes kind of like something that I might make for myself at home, which is a little disappointing just because if I’m going out to eat I want something that I can’t make myself. It is a good option though for those dining companions who aren’t very adventurous in food choices.

Overall Pray Tell is a nice enough spot for brunch. The space is of course stunning, and the breakfast pocket offers a unique choice even if it is too heavy on the dough. The avocado toast is the real winner here though of all the options we tried and even though the brunch burrito was a tad on the boring side for the most part everything tasted great. I have a feeling though that dinner is where this place really starts to standout so I’ll have to make my way down here later in the day when the sun starts to set and the eggs are exchanged for savory snacks and bites.
