Mr Chu Korean Style Churros: Toronto, Ontario

Mr Chu Korean Style Churros: Toronto, Ontario

Mr Chu is located at the corner of Toronto’s Yonge & Finch neighborhood. Tucked away next to a Korean food/convenience store it might be easy to miss if not for it’s bright yellow exterior of this cute little food cart.

So what exactly is a Korean style churro? I’m told the recipe is top secret but aesthetically they look like a traditional Latin style churro that has been shaped into a horseshoe. Mr. Chu makes them fresh to order and you have the option of having the original, special or ice cream special style.

The original comes just as-is and for $3.50 makes a nice little treat. It takes about 10 minutes or so to have it freshly fried before it is handed to you wrapped in wax paper ready to devour hot.

The Special Churro ($4.50) gives you the option of having your Korean Churro dipped in either a chocolate, condensed milk, or cream cheese glaze and then topped with either peanuts, almonds, granola, rainbow sprinkles, or oreo crumble.

Lastly there’s the Ice Cream Special Churro ($7.00), which is essentially your choice of toppings/glaze for a Special Churro that is then served on top of a cup of a cup stacked full of ice cream. You can also get an Original Churro Ice Cream churro if you want to be slightly less indulgent for $6.00

So how does a Korean churro compare to their more well-known Latin version? To be honest they taste very similar although I would say that the Korean style was just slightly more dense. At the end of the day they’re both damn delicious and it probably just comes down to whether you want your churros served with the classic dulce de leche or if you want various types of toppings/glazes and a side of ice cream. Either way your stomach will thank you.
