Lbs is located in Toronto’s Financial District just slightly North of the King and Yonge intersection. Lbs, or pounds, specializes in lobster, burgers, and salads (and apparently also in clever plays on their name). The interior is spacious and seats around 120-150 people with luxurious finishes including marble tables, plush banquette seating, and modern décor.

We started the evening off with a few cocktails including the ‘You’re not my type’ ($15 CDN + tax) and an Old Fashion ($14 CDN + tax).

‘You’re not my type’ consists of expertly shaken absolut vodka, beefeater gin, lillet blanc, and elderflower. Both drinks are strong, yet well balanced and make a great start to the meal.

First, we try out the Lobster Poutine, $20 CDN + tax. Fresh cut fries are served with lobster pieces, gravy, and cheese curds. A classic Canadian dish, it’s pretty hard to go wrong with fries, gravy, and melted cheese curds. Add lobster to the mix and you’ve got a recipe that would make any Canadian feel patriotic.

Next, we try the Premium Burger, $22 CDN + tax. Six ounces of Angus Brisket are topped with  horseradish mustard, pickles, 5 yr old cheddar, and double cut rasher. Fries and salad are served on the side. The burger is juicy and the toppings fresh. I did find the ratio of burger to bun ratio to be off though. A slightly larger burger patty would balance better with the size of the bun provided. Still, the flavors are good and the fries are crisp which is what matters most.

Of course, we couldn’t leave without trying out the lobster. There are two full sized lobster options available. The first is from their Offering portion of the menu where everying listed has a set cost of $22 CDN + tax . That portion of the menu includes a 1.25 lbs Nova Scotia lobster that is served with drawn butter, fries, and salad. of Big Claw lobster, 4lbs, $100 CDN + tax.

The second option available is their Big Claws lobsters. Available in 2lbs ($58 CDN + tax), 4 lbs ($100 CDN + tax), and 6 lbs ($185 CDN + tax), they are served with your choice of 2 butters or sauces. Sauce options include Truffle aioli (truffle mayo), Bacon butter (black pepper, double smoked), lobster butter (garlic thyme, citrus), cocktail sauce (horseradish, Worcester), and lobster gravy. Additional sauce can also be ordered for $4 CDN + tax each.

We opt for the 4lb Big Claw option with Truffle aioli and bacon butter sauces. True to the name, these lobsters have some of the biggest claws I’ve seen. They’re incredibly fleshy and go well with the bacon butter sauce.  Truffle aioli is a bit of an odd offering to go with lobster though and I find it goes much better as a dip for my fries than with the lobster.

Lastly, we end the evening with some dessert and try the ‘lbs Fresh Ice Cream Sando’, $6 CDN + tax.

The ”lbs Fresh Ice Cream Sando’ is a doughnut ice cream sandwich that has been wrapped in parchment paper decorated with clever quips on lobster, burgers, and salads. The doughnut is from Von Doughnuts and the ice cream from Ed’s Real Scoop. While it’s a little disappointing that there are no in-house made desserts I do have to give them credit for sourcing their ingredients from some of Toronto’s local legends. Plus the doughnut ice cream sandwich just tastes too damn delicious for me to stay disappointed for long.
