Butter Avenue is located in Toronto’s Yonge & Lawrence neighborhood and specializes in French macrons and pastries with a modern twist. I was lucky to have been invited to try out their new Afternoon Tea menu for Fall with a few friends.

The Afternoon Tea experience starts off with a wide selection of their premium teas to choose from including:

  • Houjicha –  Green tea from Uji, Japan with a mild, smoky flavor obtained from the leaves being roasted in a porcelain pot over a charcoal flame
  • Genmaicha – Roasted brown rice is infused with the green tea for a full-bodied taste with nutty tasting notes
  • Afternoon Picnic – A blend of roasted almond herbal tea and fresh berries, it is slightly sweet and refreshing
  • Jardin Secret – Aromatic green tea with jasmine blossoms, rose, lavender buds
  • Marvellous Moon – Fresh flavors of orange and strawberries
  • Emperor’s Mojito – Emperor tea made mojito style. Mint and lime is added for refreshing taste.

Classic tea selections such as English Breakfast, Earl Grey, and Chamomile are also available. We decide on the Houjicha, Genmaicha, and Afternoon Picnic. When the tea arrives everything is presented beautifully in individual tea pots with a copper kettle full of hot water for you to infuse your tea with. The Afternoon Picnic is particularly eye-catching with fresh sliced strawberries and blueberries added.

The first savory item to arrive is the ‘Quioche’. A clever play on words it consists of a baked ham and cheese quiche topped with a quail egg. The quiche is cooked well with a smooth, silky texture and it’s pretty hard to go wrong with ham and cheese spread throughout. I do wish the quail egg had been more runny though as it arrives with more of a soft-cooked texture, but this is mostly a personal preference.

Next of the savory items we try are the mini brioche sandwiches:

  • Smoked Samon – Smoked salmon with dill & caper cream cheese
  • Smoked Ham & Gouda – Ham, gouda, Dijon mustard, mayonnaise
  • Curry Chicken – Poached chicken, mayo, curry powder

The sandwiches are perfectly sized and the brioche is fresh and rich tasting. My favorite of the three was the curry chicken sandwich as it was quite nice to see an alternative to the classic tea sandwiches offered at most afternoon tea services.

We then move onto the sweet portion which I’m highly anticipating as this is the area where Butter Avenue specializes and where they tend to shine. Two full tiers of sweets are available, with the first having:

  • Verriene: Served in individual sized cups filled with corn panna cotta topped with mango Chantilly
  • Savory Scones: Chedder, herbs, and sea salt
  • Hazelnut Houjicha Financier: Almonds, pistachios, houjicha tea, hazelnuts
  • Pumpkin Madeleine: Cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and white chocolate topped madeleines
  • Macarons: Choice of two macarons from their entire macaron menu per person

Definite favorites here included the Varriene and of course their macarons, which they specialize in.

The second tray is even prettier than the first with:

  • Pumpkin Crème Brûlée Tart: Pumpkin insfused custard on a shortbread crust
  • Choux: Strawberry filling with strawberry Chantilly topped with fresh raspberry
  • Apple Tarte Tatin: Caramelized apple and crème mousseline
  • Cassis Honey Cake: Honey cake topped with cassis fruit

I have to say I was definitely much more impressed with this tray than the first. The pastries are not only stunning but the flavors are rich and pair seamlessly. Plus who can resist bite sized beauties?

Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Butter Avenue.  I did think that the menu was definitely heavy on the sweets though and it would be nice to see more savory items in the line up. However, if you’re looking for an updated modern spin on the classic tradition of afternoon tea then Butter Avenue is for you. Especially if you have a sweet tooth.

**For reference the Afternoon Tea is $50CDN + tax per person.
